Earth Day is on April 22 this year.
Normally when we think of celebrating Earth Day our minds go to planting trees or native plants, recycling events, or conservation awareness.
Home organization is more than tidying up our home space. It can make our home an example of eco-conscious living.
Home organization:
· Reduces waste
When we have our possessions organized and sorted “like with like” we can see what we are using. This prevents us from re-buying items that we already have. We feel comfortable donating extra items so that others can use them. This keeps us from adding to the landfills.
While organizing our pantries and refrigerators we can see what food we have on hand and not overbuy which can lead to having to dispose of outdated food.
· Reduces items going into the landfill
Setting up and organizing recycle bins makes it easier to sort items correctly so that they can be recycled instead of ending up in the dump. Setting up containers for electronic recycling or expired drugs keeps those items all in one place for the times that the recycling events happen.
· Minimizes single use packaging
Many of us have reusable shopping bags and some of us also have reusable mesh bags for produce like green beans and broccoli. Unfortunately, many people unpack their groceries and toss the bags on a shelf somewhere. So, next time at the store they are using the store’s plastic bags. If you have an organizational system that immediately takes those bags back to the car, you will reuse them over and over again.
· Encourages reusable storage containers
Having dedicated spaces for cardboard boxes, glass containers for leftovers, or what you already have on hand for storage, you reduce the need for new containers or one-use containers.
· Encourages energy conservation
Organizing your routines helps you conserve energy with tasks like laundry or kitchen/bathroom cleaning.
By organizing and managing your household routines, you reduce consumption, improve your efficiency, and use earth-friendly habits all year long.

All of these are true. The professional organizers I know are very conscious of being kind to the planet. We are usually the most knowledgeable about how to get rid of things in an environmentally-friendly manner.
One things that has been true for me, especially as I've worked decluttering with people over the years, is that I've become much more mindful about what I acquire. "Using less" is really one of the best ways to go green, as is using up what we already have instead of just pitching it.
Great list - I can't think of anything to add.
